LMS Championship Permutations

The next race of the ILMC (Intercontinental Le Mans Cup) and LMS (Le Mans Series) championships is in Silverstone. The ILMC championship has three rounds to go and there's everything to play for, but in the LMS there are only two races left. As a result, some of the class championships in LMS are close to a resolution.

 

In this blog entry, I will attempt to summarise the championship situation in each class. This will serve the dual purposes of explaining what is needed for given competitors to win their class championships and giving a summary that will enable a newcomer to pick up what's where. 

 

LMP1

 

It's a tight championship at the moment:

 

Tinseau/Collard/Jousse (#16 Pescarolo) lead on 28 points (other points in this list relative)

Belicchi/Boullion (13 Rebellion) -3 points

Jani/Prost (#12 Rebellion) -3 points

Piccini/Cortes (#23 MIK Corse) -26 points 

 

In theory, everyone entered for the LMS can still win because there are more points on the table (30) than the leading drivers possess (28). However, some teams have withdrawn from Silverstone. These teams' drivers (Hope's and Quifel's Pla/Amarel) are too far away to catch up the gap in a single race and therefore are not included in the above list.

 

Incidentally, all of these cars are petrol entries - Hope was the sole hybrid entry and all the diesel entries are ILMC-only (they'll be in the race for ILMC things and can deny points to LMS entries by finishing ahead of them, but they don't compete for the LMS themselves). 

 

It is theoretically possible for Tinseau, Collard and Jousse (the Pescarolo trio) to take the title at Silverstone. However, if they win and get pole, they still need both Rebellions to finish in 9th place or below for that to happen. This is in a class with only 10 cars total, so really that's saying the Rebellion drivers need to retire or have a total disaster of a race if the title is to be settled in Silverstone. Tinseau, Collard and Jousse look good to get the title because they've been consistently slightly better than the Rebellions, but in Imola the tables were turned, so it would be foolish to bet on any of the three driver combinations taking the trophy. Better to enjoy the fight unfold and, most likely, continue into Portugal.

 

Silverstone is likely to be a low-scoring round for all 4 because the big points are likely to be taken by the diesel cars. This is bad news for Piccini and Cortes, who need to win in order to stay in the title hunt. It would take a bizarre set of circumstances for that to happen.   

 

Teams 

 

Rebellion has two cars in their team while the other contenders have only one. This puts Rebellion in a strong position for the team title because it is matching Pescarolo for points. All they need is to have one of their cars ahead of Pescarolo in both races. If it's #12 in one race and #13 in the other, the Rebellion will take the team title but Tinseau, Collard and Jousse will have the driver title. 

 

LMP2 

 

Drivers

 

The LMP2 class has been riven with conflict all year due to a cost-cutting formula running alongside the previous unrestricted spending regime. Hopefully the fact that 2012 will make the cost-cut method mandatory will reduce the arguing that has overshadowed a tightly-fought season.

 

Ojjeh/Kimber-Smith (#41 Greaves Motorsport) 35 points (other points relative)

Watts/Kane/Leventis (#42 Strakka Racing) -5

Kraihamer/Crem (#45 Boutsen Energy Racing) -10

Firth/Beche/Thriet (#46 TDS Racing) -12

Half of the LMP2 field is likely to be out of the running for the title at the end of Silverstone. Collins, Newton and Erdos require 3rd to keep their chances going, while Frey and Meichtry "merely" need 7th and pole or 6th without pole to stay in. Silverstone is likely to be a low-scoring round due to the presence of the ILMC LMP2 entrants Signatech and OAK, even if the problem is not as pronounced for the LMP1s.

 

Rosier and Lombard need  8th place (or 7th and pole) to stay in. Gates, Garoffel and Phillips merely need to finish because there are only 11 cars and 11th yields 2 points.

 

It would take a pretty remarkable set of circumstances for Ojjeh and Kimber-Smith to win the title here. Even if they won and got pole, they'd need OAK and Signatech to share the podium with them and for Watts, Leventis and Kane to finish 8th or worse in class.

 

Lombard is a special case. He joined the #41 Greaves car in Imola, so short of his longer-standing team-mates getting injured before the race without making the car unraceable (which is virtually impossible), he cannot gain the title due to Ojjeh and Kimber-Smith scoring many points before his arrival. He'll definitely be able to contribute to the team title though.

 

Teams 

 

All the teams have only one car in LMP2, so the team fight is as above.

 

GTE-Pro 

 

Drivers

 

This is arguably the most complicated of the five championships to explain. There are two reasons for this.

 

Firstly, this is one of the series for which there are bonus points for making an engine last 15 or more hours. The 15 hours do not all need to be in a race but they do need to be in ACO-sanctioned events (which in practise means Sebring and Le Mans count towards engine timings). The other classes have them, but in LMP1 hardly anyone runs an engine long enough to get the bonus point, LMP2 has only had 2 cars get the bonus points so far and in GTE-Am, virtually everyone is going to get the same points at the same race because the cars are nearly all synchronised in terms of engine hours. The GTE-Pro drivers will all get an engine point barring mechanical failures, but some are due to get it in Silverstone and others in Portugal. The effect on the title fight is subtle. 

 

Secondly, GTE-Pro, and only GTE-Pro, has a "dropped score" system for this year. Originally, all scores were meant to count, but at the start of the first race at Paul Ricard, a "Safety" Car caused a crash that took out nearly all the Porsches... and affected hardly anyone else. In an attempt to make up for this huge mistake, the "dropped-score" rule was put in. For championship purposes, the Porsches could pretend Paul Ricard was just a bad dream. 

 

Currently, the GTE-Pro title chase stands thus:

Fisichella/Bruni (AF Corse #51) have 44 points (other points given are relative to this)
Melo/Vilander (AF Corse #71) -16 points
Simonsen/Farnbacher (Hankook #89) -17 points
Walker/Bell (JMW #66) -22 points
Lieb/Lietz (Farnbacher #77) -26 points
Goosens/Holzer (Prospeed #75) -27 points
Hancock/Dolan (JOTA #79) -30 points 

 

Granted, some of the gaps are larger than in either prototype class. However, the "dropped score" system means that there is still plenty of opportunity for a fightback, even without relying on retirements.

 

Fisichella and Bruni are due to get an engine point in Portugal and currently would drop their second-place-with-pole at Le Castellet - a rather hefty 14 points. The latter is why the championship is nowhere near a done deal. Had all scores counted, scoring more points than Melo and Vilander would have almost been sufficient to take the title (other people would also have needed to be not too far ahead) - and only once so far this season has that happened. For Silverstone to be guaranteed to count towards their score it would be necessary for Fisichella and Bruni to win. Sealing the title in Silverstone would take some major misfortune for their competitors.

 

Vilander, Melo, Simonsen and Farnbacher are their closest rivals. They are due to get their engine point in Portugal. Vilander and Melo would currently drop 1 point from Spa and Simonsen and Farnbacher would drop a non-score. To guarantee staying in the title chase, they all need seventh with pole or sixth without. For each race which any of the four has finished, they have been at least fourth.

 

Walker and Bell are due to get their engine point in Portugal and would drop a non-finish at Imola. They need third place to guarantee staying in the title chase.  They've been quite unlucky this year but also fast, so it is possible for this to happen.

 

Lieb and Lietz, the defending champions, are due to get their engine point in Portugal and would drop the non-finish in Le Castellet.  To guarantee staying in the title fight, they need to score second with pole and not need an engine change, which is a pretty tall order.

 

Goosens and Holzer are due to get their engine point in Portugal and would drop the non-score at Le Castellet. To guarantee remaining in the title chase, they need to come second, get pole and hope Fisichella and Bruni don't win.

 

Hancock and Dolan cling to the title chase by the skins of their teeth on account of getting their engine point at Silverstone. They also drop a non-finish at Le Castellet. They need to either get second and pole, or win and hope Fisichella and Bruni do not get pole, in order to stay in the title fight. 

 

Teams   

 

AF Corse 46 points - to drop 14 points at Le Castellet (other teams' points relative)

Hankook -21 points - to drop 0 points at Imola

JMW -24 points - to drop 0 points at Imola

Felbermayr -30 points -  to drop 0 points at Le Castellet

 

AF Corse are likely to win this one, simply because they have two cars in the LMS (compared to everyone else's one) as well as a points lead of which Red Bull in F1 would be jealous, proportionally speaking. Given that an AF Corse car has only retired once out of 6 LMS entries, it would be asking a lot for anyone to take the team title off them at this point.

 

GTE-Am

 

Drivers

 

Armindo/Narac (#67 IMSA) 41 points (other points relative) 

Cioci/Perrazini/Lemeret (#61 AF Corse) -2 points

Felbermayr Jr (#88 Felbermayr) -17 points

Christodolou/Quaife (#82 CRS) -23 points

 

This is the tightest class battle in the series. Unless Armindo and Narac win their class and get very lucky with opponents' results, the battle will go to Portugal. Felbermayr Jr needs to finish the race or get class pole to stay in the title fight in Portugal, while Christodolou and Quaife must get seventh with pole or sixth stay in the title fight.

 

Teams

 

All four teams have one car apiece, so the team battle is in the same state as the driver one.

LCMB On Holiday

As the timestamps for the most recent entries indicate, it's been a long time since I wrote here. I meant to write here for Le Mans and never got round to it.

 

Sadly, the F1 has been much more difficult to write about. Not because stuff hasn't been happening (Valencia was a non-event but there have been other things I'd normally write about), but other things have been putting me off. I don't feel like talking about them at this point, but I just thought I ought to say it may be a while before I feel inclined to blog again, as this doesn't seem to be as temporary a phase as I initially thought. In particular, the "other things" are such that I may end up re-focusing the blog when I do start re-writing.

 

Until then, consider LCMB on official holiday leave.

Wikipedia Wanderings

I've had a bit of a creative dry spell recently. That changed this evening when I saw WTF1's entry about the Formula 1 Wikipedia game. This is a game where you have to try to get from a random Wikipedia page to the "Formula 1" page in 6 clicks or fewer using only links in the pages themselves. It's based upon the "six degrees of separation" concept and it helps if you can make broad associational links... ...while allowing for certain weaknesses in Wikipedia's articles.

 

Take my first successful attempt, for example. The "Random Article" button placed me at Omak Airport (an airport in Washington used in World War II). You might initially think such an article was about as helpful as Lake Tanganyika Stadium (where I started the previous - and first - time). However, the article mentions certain trivia about the airport, including the airstrip construction material... ...Asphalt.

 

Now asphalt is used in all sorts of roads. Sadly, there was no mention of motor racing of any kind in Wikipedia's asphalt article despite 85% of the USA's asphalt being used in road construction. That said, in 1835 - the early days of European asphalt usage - the largest project involving the new material had 24,000 square yards of ground was covered for easy access around the... ...Place de la Concorde.

 

When I saw that I thought, "Wow! This will be easy - the FIA lives at the Place de la Concorde and the FIA article surely mentions Formula 1 among its activities!" Not so fast! Pretty much every other significant feature of the Place de la Concorde is mentioned (it features, among other things, 8 statues representing major French cities, the French National Assembly and the American embassy), but no mention of the FIA offices that are also there. Oh well, at least France does have a long and storied history in Formula 1...

 

which isn't mentioned in the France article. There is a lengthy sports section which describes a great variety of sporting activities in France. There's even a motor racing bit. Which talks about the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

 

The article on the 24 Hours of Le Mans is lengthy. It turns out that in that length, there's a part about Peugeot introducing KERS for the 2009 event which mentions its similarity to the Formula 1 version, but I missed it because I thought I'd seen the perfect link in the "Purpose" section. The first line read, "At a time when Grand Prix racing was the dominant form of motorsport throughout Europe"

 

I thought "2 clicks and home in the 6 required!" and for once I was right. Grands Prix were the original form of motor racing and many of the series that followed adopted the terminology for their individual events. Formula 1 is the most famous of these. In the article, it mentions that motor racing was started in France, but France's accomplishments with regards to sports are so extensive that this didn't even warrant a mention in the France entry.

 

Some of my Wikipedia wanderings were a bit shorter. One of them started me at Way Out West (jazz group), which includes West African drums, a dan tranh (a Vietnamese zither) and dan bau (a Vietnamese one-stringed sound box). It has performed in several notable Canadian festivals but is based in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.

 

Melbourne is the second-biggest city in Australia, originally founded by settlers from Van Diemen's Land. Whether this has any non-coincidental connection to the Van Diemen single-seater car manufacturer is unknown. What is known is that it hosts the Australian Grand Prix (Formula One). So that particular wiki walk was completed in a mere two clicks. Maybe Way Out West should be invited to the 2012 F1 Rocks, seeing as the next F1 Rocks concert has such noted non-rock musicians as David Guetta, Taio Cruz and the Sugababes...

Amusingly, the next and final F1 Wikipedia attempt I did started in a motor sport article: the 2009 Formula Lista Junior season. It is a Formula BMW series running from April to September that started in 2000 and is still happening. Most of the drivers and all but one of the teams are Swiss, but the law in Switzerland means they cannot race in their home country. Instead, they race in France (including two visits to Dijon), Germany and Italy, benefiting from a rule allowing national-level racers from anywhere in the EU or a limited number of other countries reciprocal access to appropriate series in any country involved in that agreement.

 

That said, the 2009 title was not won by a Swiss driver, but an Italian one - Kevin Giovesi. He won 5 races out of the 12 and scored nearly 50% more points than the second-placed Sven Ackermann (who was the first in a cluster of six Swiss drivers). Some progression is clearly possible because even fifth-placed Sandro Zeller competed in three different F3 championships during 2010. Kevin Giovesi went into Italian F3 but came only 15th while Sven appears to have fallen off the radar completely.

 

Returning to the wiki walk, the final round happened at Monza.  Needless to say, the Monza article casually mentions the fact that it hosts Formula 1 once... ...or twice... ...or 27 times (admittedly including reference lists). So that wiki walk got me to the destination in 2 clicks, but in a very interesting way for a motor sports fan. It's always nice to discover a previously-unknown racing series :)

GP2 Primer for Silverstone Viewers

Warning! Very long entry alert!

This is the first of a four-part series about the support races for the British Grand Prix. I thought that those people who are going to watch it from the circuit itself might be interested in some further detail about what, other than the F1, is happening.

The main support event for F1 in Silverstone is GP2. It's in its fifth season of competition and is the successor to Formula 2 (as distinct from Formula Two). Everyone uses a Dallara chassis with a Renault engine and Bridgestone tyres.

Of the 11 drivers who left GP2 during 2008, a diverse number of destination series can be seen:

- 3 went to F2
- 1 went to F1
- 1 went to Le Mans
- 1 went to DTM
- 1 went to Indycars
- 1 went to World Series by Renault
- 1 went to Superleague Formula
- 1 went to A1GP
- 1 went to the Renault Megané Supercup

Note that Giorgio Pantano left to do both the Renault Megané Supercup and Superleague. Marko Asmer's destination after leaving GP2 last year is unknown.

The reigning champion, Giorgio Pantano, will not be present. The highest-finishing 2008 driver to be racing at Silverstone will be Lucas di Grassi, who finished third last year. However, we will get to see Makes' Champion Campos Racing compete, albeit under the name of Barwa Addax and minus its founder Adrian Campos (who is F1-bound).

There are a maximum of 20 points on offer per weekend.

Pole for the feature race is worth 2 points.

The results for the feature race yield the same points pattern as F1, with a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system.

The sprint race has a 6-5-4-3-2-1 system.

Both races give out 1 point for fastest lap, but it is necessary to finish in the top 10 and start from the grid slot earned in qualifying to be eligible.

Barwa Addax Team (neé Campos Racing)
Current 2009 position: 1st
Team colours: Predominantly white, with red writing on the rear wing

They are the runaway leaders of the GP2 championship, despite losing their leader Adrian Campos to a F1 project at the end of last year. It's won four times in six races, making it almost as dominant in GP2 as Brawn are in F1.

1 Vitaly Petrov (Russia)
Current 2009 position: 1st
Helmet colours: White base with red top and go-faster stripes

Vitaly has won the Turkey feature race. However, the most striking thing about his performance has been his three lesser-positioned podiums - second in the other two feature races and third in the Turkey sprint race. Expect him to feature prominently at Silverstone.

2 Romain Grosjean (France)
2008: (GP2; ART Grand Prix)
Current 2009 position: 2nd
Helmet colours: Red and blue with a flourescent yellow arrow on the side - think a brighter version of Montoya's helmet

Initially very strong, winning the first two feature races. However, Romain has been less consistent than his team-mate, which is why he's not leading the championship. May not get to complete season anyway because he is first in line to replace Nelson Piquet Jr. if he gets sacked.

iSport International
Current 2009 position: 10th
Team colours: Red and black

iSport was considering F1 earlier in the season, which may have taken its eye off the GP2 ball. It's not entirely clear how, other than a mass clear-out, it will solve the difficulties it is currently in.

3 Giedo van der Garde (Netherlands)
2008: World Series by Renault
Current 2009 position: 13th
Helmet colours: White base with red and blue triangles on the side

Giedo has been hovering around this level of racing for a long time, probably because he's found his level. He didn't compete in the Monaco feature race, which may have broken his stride - he scored in both Spanish races but not thereafter.

4 Diego Nunes (Brazil)
2008: (GP2, DPR)
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)
Helmet pattern: Yellow base, with red go-faster stripes on the sides (a bit like Tiago Monteiro's helmet)

A surprising underperformance. Mostly Diego has been found in 11th place, only breaking this pattern to have one DNF, an 8th (in the Spain sprint) and a 14th.

Piquet GP
Current 2009 position: 9th

The team that launched Nelson Piquet Jr.'s career is currently a fairly anonymous outfit. Fortunately it has Valerio on board to propel it into points-paying position, so this season may get going for Piquet GP yet.

5 Roldán Rodríguez (Spain)
2008: (GP2; FMS)
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

More was expected from Roldán. Granted, his two previous years in GP2 hadn't been stellar, but he had usually brought the car home. Besides, he'd come third in the Asia series for Piquet Sports. How he's ended up with four DNFs and a best finish of 11th is one of the biggest mysteries of the series.

6 Alberto Valerio (Brazil)
2008: (GP2; Durango)
Current 2009 position: 12th

Got 4th and 6th in Turkey, came in low positions in Spain, didn't finish either Monaco race. The thing most striking about Alberto's performance is that both races in a given weekend tend to be of similar quality. Could therefore be a serious threat if Silverstone is a good weekend for him.

Fat Burner Racing Engineering (neé Racing Engineering)[5]
Current 2009 position: 5th
Team colours: Dark blue with red nosecone section

Last year's driver's champion drove for this team, but with its lead driver struggling to get into his stride, the most tongue-twistingly-named squad in the GP2 paddock has not done as well as it might have expected.

7 Lucas Di Grassi (Brazil)
2008: 3rd (GP2, Campos Racing)
Current 2009 position: 6th
Helmet colours: White base with black cog-like shape on top and black vertical stripes

Considering di Grassi helped develop the car currently raced in GP2, it is surprising he has struggled so much in the past two seasons. Nonetheless, he has won a race (the Turkey sprint), so it would be foolish to discount him.

8 Dani Clos (Spain)
2008: F3 Euroseries
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

This newcomer to GP2 has done two tests with Williams. Three DNFs contrast with seventh place in the Turkey sprint - which yielded no points as it would have done had it been a feature race. The signs are that Dani is finding his feet.

ART Grand Prix
Current 2009 position: 2nd
Team colours: Mostly white, with a black rear wing and red flashes

The team that carried Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to GP2 championship glory is having a tougher time of late. Even so, it has won a race.

9 Pastor Maldonado (Venuzuela)
2008: (GP2; Piquet Sports)
Current 2009 position: 4th

Winner of the Monaco sprint race. Otherwise generally seen in the lower points-paying positions.

10 Nicolas "Nico" Hülkenberg (Germany)
2008: F3 Euroseries
Current 2009 position: 5th
Helmet colours: White base with black top and red sides

This may well be the first time Williams tester "Nico" Hulkenburg has met his match. He finished behind Pastor in all of the first four races (though this included a podium in the Monaco sprint). In Turkey, he finished a position ahead of Pastor, so perhaps he can turn it around. There could be a Williams F1 drive waiting in 2010 if he does, especially since he is currently the best-performing newcomer to GP2...

Telmex Arden International[10]
Current 2009 position: 6th
Team colours: More than a little reminiscent of Red Bull's

Arden used to be a powerhouse of F3000. Now it is well in the midfield, though it is steadily improving its performances. Even if it is something of a one-car team this year.

11 Sergio Pérez (Mexico)
2008: British F3
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)
Helmet colours: White base with red top and flashes

The 2007 winner of the National Class of British F3 has had a difficult promotion to GP2 this year. His best result was 9th in the Monaco sprint, but he does have the merit of usually bringing the car home.

12 Edoardo Mortara (Italy)
2008: F3 Euroseries
Current 2009 position: 8th
Helmet colours: Mostly red

Won the Spanish sprint race, but his other finishes are 6th, 9th and 13th. Still, he's the second-highest-performing newcomer after Hulkenburg, which should do his reputation some good.

Super Nova Racing
Current 2009 position: 4th
Team colours: Black with yellow flashes

Last year, there were some doubts about the team's funding. However, it has recovered well and is now well in the mix for "best of the rest".

14 Luca Filippi (Italy)
2008: (GP2; Arden)
Current 2009 position: 7th
Helmet colours: White base with angular blue horizontal stripes on top and red back

Luca's performance this year has been peak-and-valley, ranging from second in the Turkey feature race to two DNFs. He didn't compete in the Monaco sprint either.

15 Javier Villa (Spain)
2008: (GP2; Racing Engineering)
Current 2009 position: 10th
Helmet colours: White with blue top and sides and red trim

Javier didn't really get into his stride until Turkey, when he got 7th and 2nd. Otherwise tends to hover just outside the points.

DAMS
Current 2009 position: 3rd
Team colours: Black with red flashes

The team that nearly entered F1 in 1996 is currently a GP2 stalwart - and arguably the surprise of the season. Currently third in the championship.

16 Jérôme d'Ambrosio (Belgium)
Current 2009 position: 3rd
Helmet colours: White with red flashes

Impressively, Jérome managed to be third in both of the Spanish races. He went even better in the Monaco sprint to come second. However, a DNF and a 15th in Turkey means that his position in the championship is perhaps lower than his general performance this year suggests.

17 Kamui Kobayashi (Japan)
Current 2009 position: 14th
Helmet colours: Mostly red with black diagonal stripes on the sides

To be fair, Kamui's speed is better than his current position suggests. He's scored points in both Spanish races, but is this low in the standings because he missed the Turkey sprint and only has one other finish. Still, Jérôme's performance has probably stemmed his continued rise through the Toyota driver development scheme.

Trident Racing
Current 2009 position: 12th

Trident is having a difficult time of it, not helped by a questionable choice of drivers. Such is the peril of GP2 - sometimes a big budget gets a place before a big talent out of sheer team necessity.

18 Ricardo Teixeira (Portugal)
2008: British F3
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

File under "oh dear". His best performance was 14th in the Turkey feature and he's the only driver to not qualify for a race due to lapping more than 107% off the pole time. In Ricardo's case, it was both of the Monaco races. The dubious honour was last held by Christian Bakkerud in 2007.

19 Davide Rigon (Italy)
2008: Superleague Formula
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

Davide has beaten his team-mate and not made a complete fool of himself. It is difficult to say whether the lack of points is more due to him or his team.

Fisichella Motor Sport
Current 2009 position: 7th
Team colours: Black and silver

FMS appears to be headed for another turbulent year where it somehow finds itself in the midfield despite that turbulence. This year, Zuber has looked reasonable though inconsistent, but Razia looks in line for the annual mid-season clearout.

20 Andreas Zuber (UAE)
2008: (GP2; Piquet Sports)
Current 2009 position: 9th

After not finishing either Spanish race, Andreas thrived at Monaco, securing a 3rd and a 5th. However, a 9th and 19th in Turkey suggests that he is not an especially consistent performer.

Tends to quietly keep to itself near the back of the midfield.

Helmet colours: Dark red with black detail

Owes his position in the championship to getting third in the Turkey sprint. He's only finished three of the six races though, so expect some flying carbon fibre from him at some point during the weekend.


23 Nelson Panciatici (France)

Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

Nelson has had problems finishing races (with three DNFs), but his good days haven't been quite as good as for his team-mate Valsecchi.

Ocean Racing Technology
Current 2009 position: 11th
Team colours: Turquoise and black

The most striking thing about this team this year has been its livery. It was going to have Yelmeer Burman as a driver until the last minute. The instability this implies is probably the reason for its struggle.

24 Karun Chandhok (India)

Helmet colours: Orange, yellow and black

Three DNFs, one 7th. Karun can be an exciting performer, but not necessarily the most consistent one.

25 Álvaro Parente (Portugal)

Won the World Series by Renault in 2007, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't by getting the string of DNFs he's produced so far this year. To be honest, his Spanish GT championship campaign is currently going better.

DPR
Current 2009 position: =16th (no points)

DPR has had a rough winter, leading to it being bought out by Michael Herck's father on the eve of the season opener. It is perhaps unsurprising that it hasn't got back onto its feet yet following such turmoil.

DPR has been a difficult team to drive for in 2009. Michael's dad owns the team two months ago. To his credit, Michael has performed marginally better than his team-mate, but it's difficult to assess the quality of either under the current circumstances.

First Impressions of Mercedes' Partial Purchase of Brawn

Word has come out that Mercedes has bought a 75.1% controlling stake in Brawn. The wording implies that Ross Brawn and his co-purchasers still hold part of their team, but it means that the Brawn name will be seen no more on the grid.

 

Mercedes will be the name of the Brackley-based team now; a name with a fearsome reputation in F1 as a constructor. It's only done two seasons and they were in 1954 and 1955. It won both championships and then left in response to the Le Mans disaster that also resulted in Switzerland's long-standing ban on motor racing. It is a serious organisation with serious intent; its engines have powered two champions (2008 and 2009) and been significantly involved in two other championship fights (2005 and 2007) in the past five years.

 

Brawn will not lack funding for a long time because a works engine arrangement, added to the funds Brawn already said it had guaranteed for the future from elsewhere, equals a lot of money at a time when funding requirements are supposed to be going down. Brawn is in a very good place and if Button declines a Brawn seat in 2010 then I think he would be... ...foolish.

 

McLaren worries me more. I imagine that Mercedes will still supply McLaren if it can, but I can't shake the feeling that total divorce is on the cards for 2015. It must be hoping that the recession will cease to affect the business world by then because otherwise the choice of replacement units is limited.

 

Hamilton's team-mate may be affected by these changes, but the striking thing to me is that Kimi Raikkonen doesn't seem to be featuring in the rumoured driver line-ups, despite several versions floating around. It may be that Kimi's managment are quietly revising their offer to McLaren, but if not, this is likely to spell the end of Kimi's F1 career in the most pathetic way possible. Two years ago, Kimi Raikkonen was world champion. Now he can't seem to get into any team that he wants because of the champions that succeeded him, plus some psuedopolitics and paddock doubts.

 

It just goes to show how quickly things move in F1 and how insecure any driver's position ultimately is. If this can happen to Kimi, it can happen (with variations) to any driver...

 

Today, however, let's look on the bright side: this makes Brawn the only F1 team ever with a 100% record of winning world championships in F1 apart from Mercedes.  By 2011 it could hold that honour alone. That is an incredible statistic and deserves great respect.

 

It also means that Ross has decisively succeeded in his mission to save the ex-Honda, ex-BAR, ex-Tyrrell team. While it looked likely for a long time due to Brawn's great success on-track and assurances it had its budget for three years secured, the success is sealed and can never be taken from him. Well done to Ross and all his colleagues - Mercedes may take the headlines, but this is really your day.
