Calculating Sky

Following a rather odd conversation on The Formula 1 Blog with Anonymous, it is becoming increasingly clear that a breakdown of what it would take for Sky to break even is necessary. This is, after all, the main reason why the attempt to transfer the UK rights from free-to-air to pay-TV is likely to have medium-term consequences on non-UK F1 fans. It's a bit rough-and-ready because of the timing, but I will happily tidy up anything that you think needs tidying later.

 

Wimbledon never fails to get full crowds even though few people in Britain follow tennis otherwise. Silverstone never failed to get full crowds even in years where British F1 figures fell like a stone due to Schumacher dominating. You'd be surprised at how low an audience conversion is needed to fill a stadium, so saying that test cricket grounds are still full doesn't say anything about what's going on with the TV side of things. Attending a cricket match is a special occasion. It does not mean that watching cricket is still bread-and-butter to people. The BARB statistics do not lie and they say that Sky struggles to get a seventh of the audience Radio 4 Longwave does for cricket matches, and that both combined are far lower than cricket got before Sky took over. The numbers end up working for the sport largely because Sky can afford more, but that is reliant on capping the level sports can charge it. That works financially for sports that seriously undervalued themselves (primarily by only considering the BBC pre-Sky, which of course can't run adverts to offset its expenses) but F1 hasn't done that since 1981...

I suppose if one calls 234,000 rugby viewers (2008 League World Cup) with Sky compared to over 2.6 million for the previous version* pre-Sky a success, then rugby might be considered a success. From Sky's perspective, it's a relatively successful sport because the low sanctioning fees means it can make quite a bit from the deal; from the perspective of a rational outsider surveying the effects on the sport's support base, it is a disaster.

The more one looks at the effects of Sky getting involved in sport, the worse it looks for sport. If a sport wants to go from being a majority sport to a minor one, going the pay route's a pretty effective way of doing it. That's been demonstrated time and again.


Advertising is of course part of Sky's arsenal when paying for things. However, Bernie fees are not the only costs it faces, and F1 isn't football. It costs £10 m per year to produce F1 the BBC 2011 way and to do all the extra features Sky has said it'll do, it will need to spend even more than that. ITV couldn't get that much from sponsorship when it had F1 in boom time, so given that Sky isn't having in-race advertising and is operating in a recession, it'll struggle to even meet its production costs through advertising, let alone start tackling marketing, satellite rearrangement fees (yes, making a new channel costs money) and the Bernie fee (which is now four times higher for Sky than the BBC's production fee was). 

Even so, my original calculation of a million new customers being needed assumed, optimistically, that the non-Bernie fees would be entirely covered by advertising. (Before the amount Sky paid was announced, I tended to say "between 0.5 and 0.88 million" when commenting on the internet; I was bargaining on Sky doing some sort of cost calculation prior to purchase). The £40 m from subscriptions prior to F1's arrival has to be ignored on the grounds that they'll have bought other contracts with them. These naturally must be maintained, with the possible exception of programs that directly clash with F1 programming. Other sports may not be as expensive as F1 but they do have acquisition and production fees. Instead, the calculation has to be done from base.

There are two ways of getting Sky F1 - one using the HD pack and the other using Sky Sports. The Entertainment pack cost (common to both routes) has to be ignored because the channels on the pack are funded by it, along with all their programming. Much like the BBC, each Sky channel is funded separately. Terra Nova, for example, is not a free show. Even through the HD route, the HD money is not free because all the programming on Sky has to be converted to HD. If Entertainment and Sports are priced in relation to their values to Sky, then only half the HD top-up can be assumed to be available for F1.

Let's assume that the only sport that the people are interested in is F1 and that HD buyers don't buy any other packages (if we don't, again, the figures look even worse for Sky, as that person's subscription fee would then need to be shared among however many additional contracts corresponded to that individual's customised viewing habits). The cost of Sky Sports 1 and 2 on top of that package is £20 and this is the maximum amount Sky can take in per customer per month with regard to F1. HD, once the half for Entertainment package upgrading is removed, only contributes £6.125 per customer. Only new-to-Sky customers can be assumed to be taking the package for the full 12 months, so only the 7 months where Sky has an exclusive race can be safely counted for Sky's revenue (let's assume for now that Bahrain goes ahead).

I am also going to assume that everyone who watches F1 is a singleton who never has the TV on when entertaining and doesn't have lodgers or other unrelated co-residents similar sneakily "borrowing" a chair during races. Otherwise, each viewer is only contributing part of the subscription payment. I'm also assuming none of these people are bar, pub or club owners because then every patron of the bar/pub/club is contributing towards the subscription.

Remember that the Bernie escalator ensures that prices go up at least 10% every year (that fee quoted for Sky's acquisition will be the first-year price; Bernie rules ensure it goes up and up after that). The £40 m initial annual price becomes £77.95 m by the end of the contract Sky has. If that sounds high, the fee the BBC paid went from £25 m to £40 m a year from one end of its contract to the other (projected but never reached due to renegotiation) end; if it hadn't it probably wouldn't have needed to let F1 go. That's compounding for you.

At the moment, 30% of Sky customers are on HD (therefore using the cheap route) and 70% on SD (therefore would need the expensive route). Being optimistic and assuming this proportion does not move any further towards HD despite more HD subscribers being in Sky's overall business plan, Sky needs 0.95 million new subscribers (rounds up to 1 million to the nearest 100,000 subscribers) that didn't care for any Sky-carried sport bar F1. To break even. Compounding means it doesn't have to get them all immediately - a 2012 figure of 0.53 million is enough for that specific year - but Sky's sales definitely aren't going up by the 10% per year needed simply to keep up with Bernie (they only increased by 3% per year for the last 2 years - it's pretty consistent at the moment). 

Even 0.53 million is over twice as many viewers than Sky gets for any part of its non-football programming. It is unlikely Sky will get the figures it needs because past and present data demonstrates it. This is before considering that every assumption I've just detailed here - advertising revenue, house occupancy, HD, caring about other Sky sports, Bahrain, the extent of Bernie escalator - is more likely to go against Sky than in its favour with regard to making F1 pay, and therefore require even more people to sign.

(For the curious, on the assumptions made in this item, it would take 2.08 m cumulative new customers for Sky to be able to justify taking all 20 races in the first year of the next broadcasting contract of 2018, assuming the minimum number of new customers were signed up as needed to let it break even in each previous year, that no additional fee was made for exclusivity and assuming Sky merely wished to break even with F1 due to its high profile).

Japan F1 is mostly free Fuji TV. There is a pay option (Next) but it gets 1/6 of the audience the free version does (helped by the fact the same provider on the same platform shows the free and pay options - not the case in the UK). Brazil is primarily covered by GloboTV, which is free-to-air and easily beats the pay option for popularity. Italy and Germany used to have pay TV options (through Sky) but they've folded due to lack of interest. Some other countries with smaller audiences have pay-only, and their audiences went through the floor. This has left some channels dropping F1 altogether and others putting it on progressively higher-cost options. That's what always happens with pay TV concerning sports that were previously shown just fine on free-to-air**. The audiences shrink and so the pay TV provider has to rely on cheap rates to keep the option alive. Here's a hint: Bernie will never, ever, provide cheap rates.

So why are the likes of rugby and cricket succeeding despite their TV mistakes? Because other avenues of revenue exploded in the last decade or two. Sponsorship, once quite rare for a series, has become huge money, especially for drinks companies who would struggle to advertise in certain international markets through the standard methods. Ticket prices skyrocketed, turning the weekly patronage of a favourite sport to an occasional treat for the poor without turning away the rich (in fact, with more focus on rich clients as seen in the past decade, the rich are pouring in as they spy networking and hob-nobbing opportunities). The sponsorship alone accounts for why there's more money in disability swimming than ever despite it having no media profile worthy of the name and free tickets to nearly all events. The latter is why the Paddock Club in F1 is worth over 10% of the total income of F1 despite serving a maximum of 5000 people per race.

After all is calculated, Sky's chances of making F1 break even are remote. The chances of Sky keeping a sport that doesn't break even is even remoter. The chances of Bernie finding anyone willing to pay more than Sky pay him now in those circumstances is nil. That means Britain's fees will drop. It's not clear who'd pick up the rights then - it depends who has most to spare at that moment out of the not-recently-"burned" parties. What is clear is that it would cause a domino effect. Other countries would see that pay TV does not work and be able to call Bernie's bluff by not engaging in bidding wars with such channels. It would mean the prices paid by channels would fall through the floor. So would F1's revenues.

 

F1 would have to either seriously tighten its belt (and hope it's no longer up to the neck in debt) or die.

 

Quite how not want F1 to kill itself counts as "not loving F1", as Anonymous alleged, remains a mystery.  

* - In case you're wondering, rugby union suffered even worse. The Heineken Cup final, for example went from 9 million in 2005 to below 185,000 in 2007. The only reason it's still on Sky is because the Heineken Cup charges much, much less for its tournament broadcast rights than Bernie does and the BBC is currently trying to sell sports rights rather than buy them.



** - Football, in case you're wondering, was not shown fine free-to-air before Sky got the rights; the BBC could typically only show one match a day - and hardly ever in primetime - due to broadcasting balance requirements, whereas Sky was able to show multiple ones, at any time of day, almost immediately. Being able to see twice as many matches means twice as many people are going to be interested, so it matters less if no single match gets much in the way of viewing figures compared to free-to-air - the sheer number of matches viewable through the multi-channel, more specialised pay TV system meant that many small parts became a bigger sum than the BBC could achieve. Also, people can't advertise on the BBC, so when Britain's favourite sport went to the advertisable platform, advertisers naturally paid top dollar to be associated with the sport. Football is, economically speaking, pay TV's one big sporting success.

Racing For Ethics

This comment was originally triggered by F1 Fanatic's provocatively-titled The Genocide Grand Prix, though several events in the last few weeks have contributed towards the feeling that I need to write this entry.

The vexed relationship between sport and (proper) politics does not often crop up in relation to F1. Yet there is a growing feeling in the blogosphere that the relationship between the two should be higher up the agenda.

First there was the test in Barcelona earlier this month. I avoided commenting on it much at the time, partly because I don't trust testing results very much (for all that I smiled at Fisi being fourth on the first day, I wouldn't predict he'd be fourth in the Australian GP on that basis!) The second reason was because the main story of the weekend was one on which I wasn't sure how to report properly.

On the one side, the fact that a group of people had turned up wearing costume that could (and was) construed as racially insulting against Lewis Hamilton was seriously big news, especially since there were (then) no previously recorded instances of racially-based stupidity in Formula 1.

On the other hand, I didn't want to give these same people too much coverage in case it tacitly supported the predictable media publicity that these people received. This was uncharted territory for my blog as much as it was for the Formula 1 world.

Now, with the perspective lent by three weeks of considering other matters, it may be a good time to tackle the matter in its context.

For what it's worth, I think the people who were most in the spotlight were Carnaval celebrants who made a seriously stupid choice of outfits. Carnaval is a Spanish fiesta (with many parts of the world having an equivalent festival) that occurs just before Lent and drifts a week or more afterwards. Part of the celebration is that people dress up in costumes, which sometimes poke fun at other people, especially those that have recently been in the news. However, they are not meant to be insulting or make people upset. As such, choosing outfits that used skin colour as the basis of the fun-poking was an incredibly stupid move.

That move had far-reaching consequences. McLaren have since spent their testing more or less barricaded into their pit compound, with the gates opening for a select few; one might even wonder if the rumoured move into the fifth pit box (which is normally reserved for the fifth-placed team in the championship - the better-ranking pits are bigger and nicer) was facilitated by the authorities wishing to make it harder for undesirables to get to the McLaren pit should they get into the paddock against security.

The testing barricades are sensible while the initial risk of copycats fades away, but moving McLaren to the middle of the pit lane won't solve the problem in the long term. Better security might, but some racist acts are very difficult to police ahead of time. People yelling racial taunts, for instance, generally look like everyone else until they open their mouths. More likely more cynical reasons are in play for McLaren's possible move to the fifth pit box, such as subtle pressure from Ferrari not to let McLaren have the slight advantage given by the end pit, or the realisation that the Brand Centre could do with somewhere to park...

The press from the UK and Spain accused each other for fuelling the fire, giving further cause for concern for those who believed the standard of F1 journalism was decreasing.

The FIA has launched threats to take races away if there are any repeats of the Barcelona incident, to a background of denouncements of racist behaviour by the Spanish authorities and also by Fernando Alonso (link in German). They've also announced a program called "Racing Against Racism". Without any details, however, it is hard to judge whether they will be effective in preventing the spread of wrong-headed attitudes.

It would do well to start with the press. In the last 12 months, the team-mate fight at McLaren between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton has had several levels of complexity. The mainstream press in Britain and Spain has, by and large, chosen to ignore them. Instead, both countries' presses had increasingly shallow pieces pitching the fight as ever more adversarial (apart from some harsh press statements from both parties - possibly under pressure from these same press people - and some serious indiscipline at the Hungaroring, there was little evidence of tension between the pair - it was more Alonso v Ron Dennis than anything else).

As a consequence, Hamilton's initial popularity with Britain has faded (except among the casual spectator and the British press which sees casual spectators as walking pound signs). In Spain, he never was popular and he ended up seen as "Alonso's opponent" rather than "Lewis Hamilton". Alonso has been vilified in the British press and lionised by the Spanish press (though even the more obsessive Spanish F1 does not seem to suffer from saturation effect the way their British counterparts are - perhaps they are more used to it, since the Alonso obsession in the Spanish media dates back to 2003 and Alonso's arrival at Renault).

Granted, neither driver helped their cause with some unwise acts at times. But they're F1 drivers, not plaster saints, and a realistic portrayal of their actions would have allowed us to put them into perspective. A pity the press and perspective go together like oil and water these days...

The lack of perspective meant that we ended up with fans from both countries who had effectively been brought into the sport, learned to love one driver (of their own nationality) and been implicitly made to assume that to love one driver means that any driver who does not share some single key characteristic should - and anyone who poses a threat to that driver must be hated. For the casual viewer, in the absence of information about F1 customs regarding support, will simply copy the journalists, particularly the commentators, with modifications to fit the viewer's culture and background. Absent perspective from the press, the fans will be equally lacking in perspective when expressing their opinions. When they find that their nearby peers think the same way, group acts such as that seen in Barcelona become possible.

Lewis Hamilton's one-sided fans in the British press room have already caused some people to unsubscribe from F1 Racing and demand alternatives to ITV. La Marca are the most obvious Spanish equivalent for one-sided coverage. Apart from it having a specialism in sport, it can be regarded as what The Sun in Britain would be like if the libel laws were more lax. Frankly, any paper which is prepared to go to the extremes it did to fool its readers into believing Roldan Rodruigez had a better chance of a 2008 F1 seat than he did should not be taken very seriously. However, the sorts of things that have been printed about Lewis recently constitute dangerous manipulation of attitudes and would certainly fuel racist behaviour.

Spain's main sports before Alonso came to the fore were football and bull-fighting, both sports which tend to encourage support for one side against the other. In football, the home team (from the viewer's perspective) is supported against the away team and in bull fighting, the toreador is supported against the bull.

Formula 1 is much more complicated, with twenty-two "sides" to choose from (thirty-three if you count the teams). There are many shades of grey and a wide variety of hues, and F1 confounds any attempt to understand it in simpler terms. The many who watched motorcycling before F1 will have a reasonable feel for this, but by now a very large number of Spaniards watching the sport-cum-soap-opera would not the sort of background to balance out what the media were saying.

Nationalism can be a good thing because it encourages people to think beyond themselves and particularly beyond their immediate community. The downside of this affiliation is the same as the downside of all group affiliations everywhere. To join a group can be to lose your individual identity and in losing that identity, reduce everything to “Us” and “Them”. “Us” being whoever is in your group (with those worst affected struggling to sense where their individual, original thoughts end and their memories of what their group has said or implied it wants begin). “Them” is everyone else, considered inferior to “Us”. That sort of parochial attitude is the basis of all discrimination.

The moment there is an attempt to comprehend a global activity through nationalism or any other variety of parochialism, the true meaning of the activity is lost to discrimination of those elements that come from outside your country. When the group is challenged by another from outside the group, the "pack mentality" of the group means that the most obvious point(s) of difference is/are used to attack the outsider. The hope being to defeat that outsider. In Lewis Hamilton's case, that happened to be race. Any other obvious and irrelevant indicator of difference could have been used as well, because xenophobia (the technical word for parochialism) knows no bounds.

This is why excessive nationalism led to latent racism and why it eventually came out into the open.

This is only one of several directions membership of a group can take, which is just as well because otherwise we would have to ban all group activities. It does however make sense of the transfer some people make from nationalism to racism and other discriminatory activities, and also explains why F1 has this problem now, why it's surfaced in Spain (rather than Malaysia, China or some other nation with an emerging F1 supporter base) and how the perpetrators might not have been aware they were doing anything wrong, despite how obvious it was to many in the English-speaking world.

The "pick one side to support against the other" approach simply doesn't work for F1. It is, after all, a global enterprise. The question is, has anyone told the casual Spanish F1 viewers (and press) yet?

The British media do not have this excuse, which makes their behaviour less understandable. F1 Racing has, in a nice touch, acknowledged this in its March 2008 edition. Hopefully this will mark the beginning of more objective journalism from them and that other journalistic outputs will follow suit.

Perhaps Barcelona could have been put down as a one-off incident. However, it has been revealed that there were people behaving in a racist fashion at the China 2007 GP. The situation will need to be carefully watched, a role that the "Racing Against Racism" scheme could usefully perform.

Speaking of China, that leads to the second instance of politics and sport mixing in F1 this month. The Genocide Grand Prix deals with an issue that has been latent since 2004 (the ethics of staging the Chinese GP), but has come to the fore due to the Olympics and Paralympics being held in Beijing later this year.

From the moment China won the Olympics and Paralympics, the decision was criticised. China has a very poor reputation for human rights, possibly because the Chinese concept of human rights has been based on a completely different philosophical tradition to Western human rights, causing much tension between those attempting to establish universal human rights.

This is not the only reason for poor human rights in China - classic political stalling and inertia, combined with the pre-eminence given to strengthening the economy and the Chinese government not accepting the wisdom of certain measures contribute to a country with which the likes of Stephen Spielberg will not do business.

Bernie Ecclestone was never likely to be one who had that sort of ethical discomfort. His ethical system is the ethics of the Almighty Dollar, so when China told him they could afford the circuit, Bernie's rate ($22m in 2005, $27.5m in 2006 and increasing by similar amounts since) and would allow the race to take place, he took their money and made the race happen. Should it have been that easy, though?

Some people have argued that F1 should not go to any race where the governance makes immoral decisions. The trouble with that is that every country makes immoral decisions. Some discriminate according to race, some by social or economic status, some by health, some by place of residence, some by all the above. There are a few places that manage to contrive unique "excuses" for discriminatory practise as well. And that's just discussing the discrimination side of politics - political ethics is multi-dimensional and some countries which excel in some elements do very poorly in others.

In fact, even Bernie practises discrimination of a sort, favouring those who will pay him, directly or otherwise. However, he's a single-minded professional businessman and that sort of comes with the territory. Ethics requires some sort of consideration for the consequences of actions, and if your only criterion for measuring consequences is financial, then the discrimination-by-money is not a surprising thing to note.

Still, that does not get us out of the problem, for most of us have a code of ethics, and very few will share Bernie's extreme interpretation of capitalist ethics. So what to do about China?

Boycotting the race to show disapproval with its staging has been suggested. If only financial criteria are understood by the likes of Bernie and the people who run the event, then a lack of foreign capital going inwards would make China sit up. However many locals step in to fill the spaces in the grandstands, part of the reason China has a race is to attract foreign capital and thus strengthen its economy. Absent that capital and the purpose of holding the race is diminished. PR, which is another reason the Chinese have a GP, would also be adversely affected.

As it happens, I don't get a choice over whether I boycott attending the Chinese GP or not. The Chinese entry requirements make it quite clear that anyone with a mental disorder, sexually transmitted disease or infectious disease is forbidden from entering China altogether. No exceptions.

Infectious disease I can understand. No rational government wants to allow its citizens to be infected with diseases from outsiders (who would generally come into some sort of contact with the indigenous population during their stay). Sexually transmitted diseases are a rather odd restriction, which says something about how Chinese people with STDs are regarded in their home country. But mental disorders?!? Why are they not allowed?

Anyhow, I have Asperger's Syndrome, a neurological (brain wiring) condition at the “mild” end of the autism spectrum. Asperger's Syndrome is classified as a mental disorder. So despite being a peaceful, law-abiding individual who doesn't randomly explode into purple goo on touching foreign soil, I am forbidden from spectating at the Chinese GP itself. Let's just say I have yet to talk to anyone who sees this as a sensible restriction on the Chinese government's part...

There's the ethical element (discriminating people on the basis of their neurology is as wrong as discriminating them on the basis of race). There's the self-interest element (surely venues should want more spectators, not fewer). There's the financial element (as well as paying for a ticket, the extra foreign capital flowing into local restaurants, hotels and evening entertainment locales would surely boost the Chinese economy). There's the numbers argument (a rule that bars 1 in about 150 people from entering the country before they even make themselves known to the authorities would seem pretty strange).

Even if Bernie doesn't care either way (it was once rumoured that he would hold a Mediterranean GP at his Paul Ricard circuit with no spectators at all, surely the Chinese government should have seen sense and admitted people according to whether they posed a risk to China instead of whether they fit into some artificially-produced boxes.

In short, xenophobia affecting F1 is not just practised by a handful of easily-photographed individuals, but by a variety of sources, with consequences going some way beyond hurting the feelings of the athletes competing. Sport may be at its best when politics doesn't get involved, but politics is pervasive. Sport has to take measures to control its influence in ways that benefit sport.

One could joke that the Spanish authorities could prevent future Chinese mishaps by making racism a psychologically-certifiable condition, thus preventing anyone engaging in racist behaviour from being able to enter China in the first place. Since psychological conditions have a lot of stigma attached to them in the Western world, this would be a disproportionate reaction, though.

It also wouldn't stop such people from going to the other 18 F1 races, where people with mental disorders are permitted (in case you're wondering, even Malaysia and Singapore of the current F1 venues allow people with mental disorders to enter without additional impediment, though the USA won't allow people with mental disorders to participate in the Visa Waiver Programme).

More sensibly, Spain and all other countries hosting F1 races could team up to ban any known troublemaker (whether the trouble is racial or on some other universally-objectionable grounds) from any sporting event in those countries. If this could include non-F1 races as well, this would be even more effective, for there is no reason to believe the behaviour of a given individual will be more responsible in some sports than others. Neil Horan proved that when he made a nuisance of himself at the 2003 British GP and the and also at the 2004 Olympic marathon.

Such an international agreement would need to be supported by an information campaign explaining clearly and precisely what actions are considered unacceptable. Yes, the broad-brush version is on the race tickets themselves, but how many people actually read them, especially if they're in a language in which the ticket-holder is not fluent? That, and a reasonably strict and clear interpretation of the rules should prevent too many further problems in the long run.

Bernie and Alonso have since questioned the need for "Racing Against Racism" on the grounds of it being a one-off. I am 100% sure that the specific troublemakers at Barcelona won't repeat their error because it was originally made through ignorance. That won't stop deliberately racist people in future, though, and in the coming years there is a serious danger that they will appear on the tracks of Grand Prix racing.

While F1 continues to expand into new territories, those countries whose populations actually respond to F1's presence will continue to bring new problems and new expressions of old problems into F1. A flexible response is needed. Perhaps “Racing Against Racism” should have its scope widened and be re-named “Racing For Ethics?”

GMM and the Whipped Cream Principle

This blog entry started as a comment in Sidepodcast's discussion about trustworthy websites. During the discussion, there had been a fair bit of stick thrown at GMM (Global Motorsport Media) for stories being sent through their network without proper checking. What nobody had expected was for GMM itself to reply - at length.

I started typing a response, then came to the conclusion that nobody was going to stand reading the length of that reply in someone else's blog. It is worth saying that I'm only replying to the part of GMM's comment that requires a long response - quite a bit of it made perfect sense and merits little more than an "I agree". (If a GMM representative goes so far as to read this blog entry, then I thank them for their effort in doing so :) ).

The Whipped Cream Model of The Effects of Information Accuracy Expectation

Part of the GMM representative's comment queried how GMM could get so much flak when it was ultimately one of their sources that made the error. It is an interesting question. There definitely is a tendency to send blame for errors throughout the part of the system preceding the one which caught the error. This is because information is not like a water main system, where fixing the leak makes the system run correctly again (usually). Information typically goes through several minds before reaching the end of its influence, which means there are many checking points. It is part of human nature to check information. Therefore, the expectation is that information spread is as accurate as the provider of that information knows it can be. That is why information reliability has a reflection on everyone who carries that item of information.

The quality of an information provider is affected (among other things, most of which are not even touched upon by this discussion) by how closely the items of information provided link to reality. Accurate information increases the quality and the reverse is true. In fact, given how the human mind works, negative experiences stand out more than positive ones (and, in general, have more influence). One erroneous item of information, if in the wrong place, can throw askew a lifetime of understanding.

One could call it the "whipped cream" principle - in the same way as whipped cream transported from a cartridge to a bowl of pudding leaves cream stuck to the edges of dispenser and pudding as well as the cartridge, so the effects of information stick to the conduits and recipients of that information as well as the source. If the cream is in-date, then nice cream will stick to everything. If the cream has gone off before it's piped through, then everything will stink and, unless washed down properly, all the cream that comes out will taste funny even if the source was subsequently good.

This is why scientific journals have a process of peer review and reputable news journalists have checking systems. I have no idea what checking systems the German Focus magazine might have, because the only Focus magazine I'd heard of before yesterday was the UK science title. Focus should have checked the information before publication, but by the same token everyone down the chain should have checked the information as best as they were able as well.

As to why the messenger is getting shot, that is because blame is considered to attach to every part of the system that delivered the false information (the reverse is also true). So when the vote story was found to be inaccurate, Focus got some of the blame, GMM got some of the blame, the sites that spread the story thereafter got some of the blame and (in some cases) the individuals who went on to tell their friends about it got some of the blame.

However, previous track records are taken into account when the total effect of an information error is calculated:

- Focus is not the source of many stories we know about. While the readers of the vote story probably wouldn't trust it again, they are also unlikely to be in a position where that is an issue.

- GMM has had quite a few erroneous or misleading stories in the past. The effect of the vote story was quite small in terms of perception, it just so happens that it was the story that caused things like this discussion to take place (owing to a number of things over which GMM has limited/no control, such as the lack of substantial news that interested Sidepodders at that moment, the discussion of media quality issues in previous weeks prompted by the crossing of cut-off points (discussed in the "Information Accuracy, Freedom and Authority" section) and the tendency of Sidepodders to make lists - "Websites You Can Trust" being a very easy activity to turn into a list).

- The sites spreading the story often do what Keith does and moderate their feed. This reduces their informational error rate. While the individual erroneous story will have had more impact on them than GMM (and the more accurate the site usually is, the bigger the impact), the higher starting point of trust means that the net trust level is still higher than GMM's.

- The effect on individuals is varied and difficult for me to comment on personally, since I only told other people about it after the story was revealed to be false. Everything from zero effect to a complete loss of trust is possible, depending on the history of the relationship, the track record of the individual information provider and the receptivity of the recipient.

Granted, not everyone has the phone number to the right person in Mercedes to establish whether a vote on the F1 programme happened or not. I suspect that the nature of GMM may preclude it from having the right contacts to absolutely prove or disprove every story that crosses its desk (sometimes even the specialist press struggle). But a web monitor role implies that there is a certain amount of checking for accuracy.

Asking the source of each news item "What is the background for this item?" where it is not immediately obvious would be a good way of reducing the error rate while remaining within the powers GMM has. I suspect the answer received for the vote story would probably have allowed GMM to stop the story in its tracks, and maybe even issue a cautious denial itself. In the latter case, it would even have a (valid) scoop, which would increase the quality of the information conduit. In turn, this would increase the trust people had in GMM and increase GMM's ability to monetise that trust (which ultimately helps keep GMM going and growing).

Information Accuracy, Freedom and Authority

Next, the GMM representative wondered how the denial of the story invalidated the GMM story.

The explanation of this is summarised in yesterday's blog entry. What happened was that James Allen, a journalist most noted for his ITV commentary but who also writes books, mentioned in his blog that he had phoned Mercedes and they had denied the story. The key here is "he had phoned Mercedes". This immediately gave his take on the matter a more solid basis than the previous existing information, including that from GMM. Also, whatever gripes people may have had over James' commentary, he was not known for giving inaccurate information out (and when he did he usually got corrected before any damage got done, usually because the error had been committed in the high-pressure arena of the commentary box - one of several reasons why many high-speed sport broadcasters have two commentators). Taken together, this meant the information was most likely reliable.  This is known as information authority.

Information with authority tends to be believed over information lacking in authority. In an environment where pre-censoring is not practised (as in a place with a free press), this becomes important. The more censoring of information is delegated to individual intelligences, the more important information authority is. Note that information authority does not come from it having been approved by some (psuedo)political institution (otherwise we'd take everything the FIA said at face value), but through the likelihood of the story's proximity to the truth, the clarity and detail of the information, the track record of the information provider and how well the information fits in with other items of information the recipient possesses (or believes he/she possesses).

A free media tries to meet whatever is considered the most important value in the society in which it is placed. In the capitalist West, this often means being as profitable as possible. However, whatever other value(s) the press may chase have to be balanced by at least a modicum of what the people want, otherwise who will read their material? It so happens that when it comes to information, what most people want is authority. Many are satisfied by a low level of authority, but many others want the highest level of authority possible. Yes, it is possible for a news source to be wrong with authority, but if it is frequently wrong it will not retain its authority for long. The less authority an information source has, the less likely it is to be believed. "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" demonstrates this principle simply but brilliantly.

As for the analogy entailing our reaction to getting fifteen good strawberries and one bad one, there will be a variety of behaviours in that situation. Again, these vary according to the expectations of the buyer, the quality of the previous strawberries from that vendor and the quality of strawberries from other vendors. If fifteen out of sixteen is relatively good in the strawberry market, then people will be happy to continue with the vendor and will easily forgive the bad one. If other vendors routinely get sixteen good strawberries out of sixteen (and, to improve the analogy, charge more - with the strawberries, the price is currency, the other outlets' price is time waiting for the items), then responses get more mixed. Some will want the cheap strawberries regardless of quality, some want the consistently reliable strawberries regardless of the cost. The majority will consider both types. The more frequently bad strawberries appear, the more likely the high-quality ones will be chosen instead of the cheap ones, but everyone has different cut-off points. The vote story may well have crossed a few key people's cut-off points.

Speculation

The GMM representative made an interesting point about speculative stories. He/she says that 6 out of 10 "highly speculative" stories are completely false, 3 out of ten are partially true and 1 out of 10 is completely true. GMM's position is pro-speculation. A lot of the response is anti-speculation. I would be somewhere in between.

I don't mind speculation if it is clearly marked as such. If someone providing information has reason to doubt its accuracy, then that tag helps put the information in its proper context. This is especially true if a) the provider has specific grounds for that doubt and b) those grounds are provided along with the information. While it would be awkward for GMM to say it doubts an item because its source has previously provided dodgy information (for one thing, the source might refuse to provide further information to it!), other causes of doubt could be provided.

This is especially important given the failure rate of speculative stories. If we take the "6 out of 10" figure as true (while I have no proof, it's the most accurate working figure I've seen and the GMM representative is more likely to know the figure than I am), then that means the majority of such stories are false. That is a serious failure rate for information of this type, even if speculative stories form a small proportion of the total output. If an investment had a 6 out of 10 chance of losing money, the government would demand some sort of warning. While it would be wrong for a free press to have such a thing imposed on it from the government, the general public would benefit from wanting/expecting/requesting it of their information sources. GMM should be capable of it - the statistic provided by the GMM representatives proves that it is capable of recognising a speculative story, at least to an extent where it is confident of knowing the boundaries for the purposes of providing that statistic. If degrees of uncertainty can be indicated, so much the better, but one can't have everything.

Speculative stories presented as fact have no place in my diet of information. There's enough bias and disinformation-at-source to filter out without knowingly getting more from the intermediaries separating me from the source. Granted, GMM is not my brand of vodka (I don't drink vodka, but that's another story entirely...), but quite why anyone would want speculation to look like fact is a mystery. Of course I want to know as much as possible about F1. But taking in inaccurate information that has to be unlearned and replaced in short order gets in the way of that goal, especially since I only have twenty-four hours in a day*.

As for "wondering ahead of time"... ...humans are good at that when left to their own devices. All the likes of GMM can do is direct the path of such wondering. Asking for the direction to be as valid as possible seems reasonable.

De-bookmarking is a problem because of the ubiquity of GMM content across the internet (and, at various times, other erroneous stories). The interconnectedness of the internet can be wonderful at times, but a simple de-bookmark wouldn't remove the content in its entirety. What needs to happen is a better appreciation of how to spot a good story from a bad one, improved story moderation from everyone and a preference for accurate information over inaccurate stuff.

* - Could be worse. In the Triassic period, there were only twenty-three hours per day...

As Media Collide (Part 1)

This has been a good week for me in terms of learning about how the other side lives. Several events inspired this post, but it would be fair to state that this is the comment I was originally going to put in BlogF1's entry on improving coverage. However, I decided that a comment that threatened to be longer than the original post is not perhaps the best of ideas.

The Internet has become a hot topic in the F1 world, what with a YouTube video playing a key role at the Japanese GP, Ron Dennis bemoaning the internet phenomenon and me discovering some interesting different ways to watch F1. The latter meant I had three perspectives on the Brazillian GP (or parts of it, at any rate).

I saw Speed TV's coverage of Brazil qualifying this year (long story involving an internet connection and some possibly-illegal behaviour), since ITV wouldn't broadcast live. While some aspects were really irritating (the whole thing was delayed 15 minutes to make way for NASCAR truck qualifying, and they missed loads of Q1 and Q3 due to ads), I envied the Americans their sane and balanced commentary line-up. David Hobbs seems very fair-minded, and although Peter Windsor has some biases, he seems to keep them much more restrained than James Allen.

In addition, I accidentally stumbled on some Spanish commentary some time later. It was on YouTube, and had I known it was a commentary involving copyrighted material, I would have given it a miss. (Well, I am a librarian trained in copyright issues, and if I don't obey the law on this, who will?) The copyright, however, is a separate issue and merits its own post - here's one F1Fanatic made earlier.

I have no idea how the Spaniards put up with their coverage, because the commentators seem to have the habit of talking over one another whenever anything exciting happens. While this may convey the excitement of F1 well, I cannot say that it increased my understanding of what the commentators thought very much. If anyone receiving the Spanish version of F1 races is reading this, please could they enlighten me?

ITV (who I watched for their usual coverage) do have serious bias problems, and is clearly aimed at part-time fans. This increases ratings at the expense of commitment - and you need commitment to stick with F1 any length of time. Thankfully, we have Martin Brundle, but I have taken to watching the music channels for the first half-hour of ITV's hour-long build-up to avoid the outbreaks of Lewisteria the other people on ITV have got. I also stop watching the races as soon as the podium ceremony is done, unless a driver I support other than Hamilton has made it to the podium, for the same reason. Consequentially, I haven't watched any post-race press conferences this year.

There are other problems with the way the media are interacting with the sport and each other.

Most races are currently directed by Bernie's organisation. I sometimes suspect they hired all the Austrian GP camera directors, because the same problems of bias and looking at fresh air are evident in the shots as they were in the coverage of the Austrian rounds before FOM got greedy. If only they'd asked one of the better countries to take over the camera work, we'd have a much better result.

The internet coverage is abysmal. I can't get formula1.com to work on my computer most of the time, so I can't comment on the live timing. What I can say is that on the rare occasion I have been able to get onto the site, the usability for people like me has been virtually non-existent. The FIA's site is not much of an improvement, and is in fact less usable and reliable than in its previous iteration.

While Ollie at BlogF1 may feel inferior on this sort of matter, he shouldn't - his blog is highly accessible and would score well on any internet usability test. Truth is, so are most other F1 blogs, and the majority of forums and other sites on the topic. If all us amateurs can get it right, why can't the FOM and FIA with all their technical firepower backing them up reach the same levels of usability and functionality? The worrying thing is that the FOM and FIA don't even care - their apparent apathy on matters not directly concerning power and money spreads even there, even though their power and money would be increased with usable sites.

The solution for the internet is three-fold:

1) Let people put clips on YouTube and similar free non-downloadable sites, so long as they were short (I believe YouTube's limit is 10 minutes a clip, and I think this is sensible to allow step 2) to work).

2) Have a central place where full races can be watched on a pay-per-race system (perhaps £3-5 per race). These basic races would have just the FOM-recorded video and sound, and would go from the 5-minute mark before races to the end of the race, plus podium and full post-race press conference. For an extra fee (£1, perhaps), the user could access the commentary from the professional provider of their choice, including all pre- and post-race content (this would be identical to whatever that channel broadcast, except without ads and with any content the broadcaster would like that would only work on the Net). The £1 supplement would go entirely to the broadcaster whose content was being viewed. This would set up competition between the broadcasters (all stations like extra money!), would reduce bias considerably (to get more viewers) and garner extra money for FOM (the FOM loves extra money!)

3) The third-party internet world needs to be embraced. Since the protaganists have, for the most part, proved completely unable to understand or cater for the requirements of the obsessive internet-based F1 fan. The likes of itv-f1.com would benefit from acknowledging these sites, perhaps by adding links to more detailed sources at the end of their news items (ITV itself is generally slow on the uptake as well as low on detail). Also, the good sites should be elevated in status, to the point where they are considered the equal of any traditional credentialed source.

The FIA's idea of posting regulations to the internet is good, but it is rather lazy in its uploading of said rules (new 2008 and 2009 Technical Regulations were announced yesterday and still haven't been posted!). Plain-language explanations would not only benefit us - given the problems various teams have had in the last couple of years, it would surely improve the running of the sport as well. But that's another story.

WThe European GP Winklehock and Wet Weather

I am quite aware that many interesting things happened during the European Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton appeared to have picked up some sort of jinx (very unlike him). How else do you explain skipping off the track on lap 2 (OK, maybe that was just because Turn 1 resembled Sheffield a couple of weeks ago...), swapped to the dry behind the Safety Car when conditions clearly indicated the opposite, did the second pit stop too late to avoid getting baulked by Fisichella for nearly a lap and then swapped to the rain tyres too early?

As the ITV commentators said, it would be inadvisable for Lewis to visit a casino on the way home. About the only right decision he made today was to keep his engine running when everyone else in Turn 1 gave up. Even then, that one smart decision was nearly enough to net him a point.

There was a neat tussle for the final podium spot between Mark Webber, David Coulthard and Alex Wurz. All three had got there against the expectations of their grid slots to some extent. In the case of the Red Bulls, reliability had for once been impeccable. David Coulthard had done particularly well out of the early chaos, which explained his rise from 20th position. Wurz had fought like a tiger, while Webber had simply driven a tidy race and benefited from Hamilton and Raikkonen's woes. Well done to all three for keeping us entertained.

Heidfeld was being controversial, which would normally be like saying the Spyker is really fast (more on that later). Besides crashing into his own team-mate at the start, he also managed to be involved in a collision with Ralf Schumacher, which is being investigated as I write. Personally, I think Ralf Schumacher shut the door a little too tightly, but Nick probably shouldn't have expected there to be a space round the last term.

That said, if Nick had won the race, it wouldn't have been as important to him as the birth of his second child, Joda, the previous night. Joda is a cool name, and best wishes for his future. Congratulations also to Nick Heidfeld and his family.

As a Spyker supporter, though, the thing I will remember most from this race is the flash of orange in the first sector of lap 2 going round what appeared to be a cruising red car. The red car was Raikkonen, and he was cruising because he'd missed the pit entry on the previous lap. Those dry tyres really weren't up to much.

The orange flash was Markus Winklehock. This was the same Markus Winklehock who 24 hours earlier, had been 1.5 seconds slower than his team-mate Adrian Sutil, who in turn was considerably slower than his non-Spyker-equipped rivals. The same guy, I might add, who got his race debut because two richer blokes were stuck in testing contracts. How we grinned and laughed at my house when we saw the brilliance and absurdity of the overtaking move - and that's even with Dad being a Ferrari fan!

A few seconds before this overtaking move, they had passed a large body of water. This body of water had, two minutes before, been a dampish piece of road called Turn 1. Now it resembled the roads around Sheffield and Chesterfield a couple of weeks before. This wannabe lake had been responsible for several cars falling off the track. Dry tyres just don't deal with wannabe lakes very well. Just ask Lewis Hamilton, who spent a good two-and-a-half minutes removing his car from the gravel trap. And that was with the help of several well-muscled marshalls pushing him.

Lewis Hamilton did at least have company at this point. Felipe Massa spun there, but neatly regained the track without beaching himself. Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, both Toro Rossos and Adrian Sutil finished their races with tyres full of gravel. Although Adrian Sutil nearly clipped Hamilton's car (that would have changed the complexion of the race if it had happened!) but the winner of the "scariest crash" award was Vitantonio Liuzzi. He crashed last out of the five retirees. After he began the aquaplane, he nearly hit the Safety Car. For good measure, he also tapped a crane that had come to retrieve the other stricken cars from the gravel. Fortunately, the crash wasn't very heavy and everyone was fine.

Even so, a lot of people were struggling in the conditions. Giancarlo Fisichella found somewhere else to spin on lap 2 without getting into too many difficulties, and most drivers were very, very slow. Especially as much of the first sector was only navigable at a slow pace. Nick Heidfeld said on the team radio that "the conditions are undriveable", and he had a point. Especially with Lake 1 needing a bow wave to get through properly, and F1 cars having no bow wave worth mentioning.

Winklehock, on the other hand, was fine, because he was the only driver on the grid on wets. Why was this? Well, the Spyker staffers had looked around at the start of the formation lap and decided that the weather report stating that rain was due in 20 minutes (five minutes previously) might have been a little lengthy in their predictions. The people opening their umbrellas in the stands and getting wet hair in the pit lane were good clues. As a result, they split their strategy - Adrian Sutil did the conventional thing of using dry tyres, and Markus Winklehock pitted at the end of the formation lap for fuel and wet tyres.  

After this, Markus flew on the extreme wet tyres. He clearly can race well in those conditions, and that combined with being the only bloke on the right tyres meant that he was 33 seconds ahead of the beleaguered field by the end of lap 3. The last had indeed become the first.

Alas for Winklehock and Spyker, the race director decided he'd had enough of errant drivers colliding with his safety vehicles and of drivers going water-skiing at Turn 1. Firstly, he called the Safety Car. This neutralised the field... ...but most of the F1 cars could not keep up with the Safety Car. Even Winklehock was struggling to go as fast as the Mercedes SLR. A great advert for Mercedes, but not much use for F1 cars, which need to go at a certain speed to keep their tyre pressures up. Therefore, Charlie Whiting did the sensible (but unfortunate for Markus) thing and flew the red flag.

This led to the only error of the race for Markus and his crew, albeit an understandable one. A prediction appeared that there would be more rain five minutes after the race re-started. Markus left his extreme wet tyres on. I know Jarno Trulli joined him in the extreme wets, but the rain didn't return until lap 51. And then it was heavy drizzle...

When everyone got going again 20 minutes later, everything was back to normal. Everyone except Lewis Hamilton passed Markus Winklehock (when you're on the wrong tyres, you sure do know about it!), Markus retired ten laps later with broken hydraulics, and I wondered if I'd dreamed up the whole thing. But no - the ITV crew assured me after the race that what I thought I'd seen was indeed true. Big grins resulted, as I confirmed my notes about my new favourite rookie.

Forgive me for being a little overexcited at what on the face of it seems a pretty unremarkable result. But rest assured, it is a result that will long be remembered by Spyker supporters everywhere. And it will be a long time before the paddock forgets Markus Winklehock's debut.

I wonder if he'll get a drive later this season? If Spyker can afford it, I would strongly recommend that they take Markus on again for the next wet race...
