Firstly, sorry for the lack of Twitter updates.
In common with a number of my followers, I had stuck with Old Twitter until the bitter end. The reason was very simple: each time I had experimented with New Twitter, the tweet submission and search facilities had not worked, which meant it was useless to me.
I have been unable to use my Twitter account since New Twitter was rolled out. The problems turned out to be even worse than when it was trialled. Yesterday evening, I got a blank screen for everything except Settings and Help. Settings wouldn't accept any changes. I reported the problem to Twitter and thousands of other people did the same.
This morning, good news:
- I can now see the most recent 3.5 tweets (the 0.5 tweet shows the left half and not the right). The amount can vary by 1 tweet in either direction depending on how the system is feeling
- I can see the left half of the text box for typing in tweets
Bad news:
- The 3.5 tweets I can see don't update without manual refreshing
- I cannot select the text box to enable entering a tweet
- The sidebar and links at the bottom of the page don't load
- Search doesn't work in the top bar
- The homepage and my profile page do not load at all
- Most of the help centre no longer loads (which is worse than yesterday). The only bit that works is the "Blank screen" page, which is the one it was left on when I last left the help centre.
- Mobile Twitter produces a blank screen
- The ticket generation system doesn't work, so I can't get my complaint heard unless someone happens to read the (currently 143 pages long, and that's where it was yesterday, so the really old complaints have fallen off the display allowance)
This could be a show-stopper in terms of using Twitter. I have yet to encounter a Twitter client that will install on my computer (even though there are supposedly dozens of such clients). I am therefore reliant on the Web interface in order to be able to use Twitter.
It would be a shame to be unable to use Twitter - it's become the way people who are interested in discovering new stuff find it. Without that, I'll be spending all my time talking to the same groups of people; ones settled into another forum or blog's way of thinking and happen to like my contribution to that forum/blog. Having friends is always a good thing from a personal perspective. A lack of "new blood" is dangerous from a blog perspective. It's difficult to exchange thinking on a subject when the thinking in question has already been exchanged.
Please bear with me while the problems are (hopefully) reserved.
Hey if you get tired of my thinking let me know oK? :-)
Lonny, I am definitely not tired of your thinking. The worry is that when there are a limited number of people sharing ideas, the ideas are at risk of ossifying into predictability. That can make everyone tired of everyone's else's thinking. Even though in the back of their minds all involved know that different ideas bring out different thinking from everybody, the problem is figuring out what ideas those might be without the connections with different ideas and intermixing of old friends and new people (new people do come up with ideas, but combining the old and new creates more ideas in total than could be created from the same people if they didn't interact with one another).
I did not write the last 2 paragrahs with the intention of making anyone unhappy. Sorry for making a mess of expressing myself.
Update: Twitter won't load at all now...
I was just gently pulling your leg Alia
Ah, oK ;)
Uodate: Desktop version of Twitter now loads the timeline area and will tweet... ...provided I don't attempt to scroll or do anything the least bit complicated with it. on the downside, the Help section has to all intents and purposes ceased to function and Mobile Twitter, according to my computer, not only doensn't load but doesn't exist.
By "the least bit complicated", I mean mentioning anyone at any point in a tweet locks up the browser and searching of any kind seems to require a super-fast broadband connection because the time needed to generate answers is close to the time-out period despite my broadband connection not being shared and not doing anything else.
The ability to tweet during searches has gone too, but I think that might be the new "improved" design rather than an error.
